Description : Faust, is a two part play by German playwright, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, where Part I was published in 1808 and Part II in 1832, after the author’s death. This was written by him in his later years and is said to be Germany’s greatest contribution to world literature. While part I sets out the magician Faust’s despair, his pact with Mephistopheles, the Devil and his love for Gretchen or Margaret, part II dwells on Faust’s life at court, the wooing and winning of Helen of Troy, and his purification and salvation. The play draws on a variety of cultural material such as theological, mythological, philosophical scientific, musical etc. and whereas part I is more realistic, part II is symbolic. A wonderful book for Goethe and German literature fans!
